Bill co-founded
and served as publisher for Falcon Publishing for 21 years. Along with
his partner, Mike Sample, he built Falcon Publishing into a premier
guidebook publisher and the most recognized brand in the outdoor book
marketplace. After 21 years at the helm, Bill sold the company in September
1997 to Landmark Communications. For the next three years, he worked
for Landmark as president of the company's book publishing programs.
In 2000, Landmark sold its book publishing operations to Morris Communications,
and it was relocated from Montana to Connecticut. At this point, he
left the company to start a consulting career and finish several book
projects.
By the year 2000,
Falcon had more than 700 titles in print, sales of $10.5 million, and
76 Employees. Significant accomplishments include development of a leadership
position in Falcon's market niche, a successful branding strategy, an
electronic content management strategy, a direct-to-consumer sales program,
and an innovative in-house distribution system envied by the company's
competitors.
Bill also founded
and published two magazines and worked on several others. He started
and worked the first nine years of his professional life as publisher
of the Montana Outdoors magazine growing the circulation to 52,000
subscribers. In 1993, he started Falcon Magazine for Kids and
grew circulation to over 200,000 subscribers before selling the magazine,
to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, where it was renamedWild Outdoor
World.
Bill has also been
on the other side of the publishing business as an author of 19 books
and dozens of magazine articles.
